Strengthening Bonds: BaltHUB’s Collaborative Visit to Poland and Ukraine

From May 13 to May 24, 2024, the #BaltHUB initiative, supported by the Estonian Network of People Living with HIV (EHPV) and the Nordic Council of Ministers, embarked on a vital mission to Poland and Ukraine. The visit aimed to enhance the existing partnerships,  support Ukrainian refugees, and foster meaningful collaborations among and with local communities and NGOs, local governments and institutions, and international humanitarian bodies. Here’s a closer look at our journey and the impactful connections we made.

Uniting for a Common Cause

The BaltHUB visit was more than a series of meetings; it was a testament to the power of unity and shared goals. Our objective was clear: to strengthen cooperation, improve support mechanisms for vulnerable communities, and exchange valuable knowledge on crisis response and public health innovation, as well as to show the support to local communities.

Warsaw, Poland: The Journey Begins

Day 1-2: Setting the Stage

Our journey began in Warsaw, where we were warmly welcomed by representatives from HelpNowHUB Fundacja and other local organisations HelpNow, an online platform, plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive support to Ukrainian refugees, offering information, psychological assistance, and logistical help. It`s a newly established refugee led organization in Poland. Moreover, we met with Ukrainian “Alliance Consutlancy”, that is partly relocated to Poland.

These initial meetings were pivotal. We discussed collaborative strategies to integrate refugees into local communities and shared resources to bolster our support efforts.

The highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and joining of organisations to BaltHUB – namely Fundacja HelpNowHUB and Alliance Consultancy, have signed the existing MoU on BaltHUB and joint their efforts to support Ukrainian refugees in Nordic States, marking the beginning of a stronger, united front in the fight against the HIV epidemic.

Lviv, Ukraine: Immersing in Local Efforts

Day 3-4: Grassroots Engagement

Our next stop was Lviv, Ukraine, where we dove deep into the heart of grassroots initiatives. We met with “100% LIFE, LVIV,” the country’s largest patient-led organizations regional office dedicated to improving the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. At the Lviv AIDS Center, we witnessed firsthand the innovative approaches being employed to provide healthcare services under crisis conditions.

One of the most touching experiences was visiting the LGBT+ shelter managed by Alliance.Global. This shelter offers a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals, providing essential support services and a sense of community in Western Ukraine. We engaged in heartfelt discussions about the challenges they face and their incredible resilience.

Kyiv, Ukraine: Expanding Horizons

Day 5-8: Building Stronger Networks

In Kyiv, our interactions were equally profound. We started with Spectrum-Kharkiv, Convictus Ukraine, APH, Virus Off and Alliance.Global representatives, focusing on emergency response and maintaining health services during the ongoing war. Spectrum-Kharkiv supports the LGBTQ+ community in Kharkiv, while Convictus Ukraine provides comprehensive services for HIV prevention and treatment to KP`s and IDP`s in Ukraine. We have visited Alliance Global where we met with local staff, and discussed how the work was changed during the war.

A visit to another Alliance.Global shelter in Kyiv’s city center highlighted the critical role these safe spaces play in supporting LGBTQ+ individuals affected by the war. The discussions were enriching, exploring shelter operations, addressing challenges, and planning future expansions.

Meeting with Sviatoslav Sheremet

A memorable meeting with Sviatoslav Sheremet, co-founder of Gay Forum Ukraine, provided deep insights into HIV legislation, human rights during the war, and the development of the LGBTQ+ movement in Ukraine. Sviatoslav’s passion and dedication to advocacy work were truly inspiring.

Honoring Those Lost: AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day

On May 19, we participated in the AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day at the HIV/AIDS Memorial in Kyiv. It was a solemn and moving experience, honoring those lost to AIDS and raising awareness about the ongoing fight against HIV. The memorial served as a poignant reminder of why our work is so crucial.

Innovating with TeleHealth

The culmination of our visit was the opening of the Help24 TeleHealth office in Kyiv at the L.V. Gromashevsky Institute of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases. Help24 TeleHealth is an innovative platform offering virtual medical consultations, remote laboratory testing, and mental health support. Initiative is led by Alliance Consultancy, with support of Alliance for Public Health and technical supervision of Public Health Center of MoH of Ukraine.

Looking Ahead: A United Front

The BaltHUB visit was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of international cooperation and the resilience of civil society. Our meetings and engagements underscored the critical role of partnerships in addressing public health challenges and supporting vulnerable communities during these challenging times.

As we move forward, the bonds we’ve strengthened and the knowledge we’ve shared and gained will guide our efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all. Together, we can make a significant difference, fostering a future where everyone has access to the care and support they need.

Stay connected with us as we continue this important journey, working hand in hand with our partners and stakeholders to support those who need it most.
