Advanced Training for Peer Consultants: Enhancing Support Strategies in Narva

On May 22, the RefAid BaltHUB project hosted an advanced training session for peer consultants in Narva. This session was designed to equip consultants with the specialized skills necessary to navigate complex barriers in client support, focusing on the practical application of care management strategies.

The training emphasized the importance of structured support, with a deep dive into reviewing client care plans, prioritizing individual needs, analyzing progress, and establishing realistic, actionable steps to help clients achieve their goals.

Addressing Barriers to Client Care

Trainer Jekaterina Smirnova guided participants through an intensive analysis of real-world scenarios and the obstacles that often hinder successful plan implementation. The discussion covered a broad spectrum of challenges, including:

  • Structural Barriers: The absence of valid identity documents, lack of stable housing, limited access to communication tools, and financial instability.

  • Social and Systemic Challenges: Overcoming the impacts of stigma, discrimination, and restricted access to essential services.

  • Communication Hurdles: Navigating language barriers and building rapport with clients who may be experiencing significant emotional distress.

Strengthening the Support System

A core focus of the workshop was developing the interpersonal skills required to serve as a stable support system for clients in various emotional states. Peer consultants explored specific techniques to address client mistrust, anxiety, and fear.

The training highlighted the importance of emotional resilience for the consultants themselves, discussing how to manage professional boundaries, avoid feelings of helplessness or anger, and maintain a constructive focus on finding a path forward. By refining their communication strategies, participants learned how to build stronger, more effective relationships that foster client empowerment and progress.

This training marks another step in RefAid BaltHUB’s ongoing commitment to professionalizing peer-led care, ensuring that consultants are prepared to provide high-quality, empathetic, and effective support to the communities they serve.
