Creative Therapy and Community Support: A Special Meeting in Tartu

On May 24th, the city of Tartu hosted a meaningful and creative therapeutic gathering organized by the Estonian Network of People Living with HIV (EHPV) as part of the RefAid BaltHUB project. This meeting was designed to provide Ukrainian refugees living in Estonia with a welcoming space for relaxation, connection, and mutual support.

The Power of Creative Process

The centerpiece of the event was a diamond painting workshop, where participants decorated household coasters with rhinestones. While this activity may seem simple, the meticulous, repetitive process of working with small details proved to be a powerful therapeutic tool. It allowed participants to clear their minds, ground themselves in the present moment, and temporarily step away from the daily stresses of life in a new country.

Beyond the artistic output, the workshop served as a vital social anchor. Each participant returned home with a unique, handmade coaster—a functional piece of art that will serve as a warm reminder of a supportive community.

Community Connection and Healthcare Access

The event was characterized by a spirit of solidarity and friendship. Accompanied by aromatic coffee, tea, and refreshments, participants had the opportunity to converse in their native language, exchange local news, and offer one another emotional support.

A significant aspect of the meeting was its commitment to public health. Given that the workshop coincided with European HIV Testing Week, all participants were offered the opportunity to undergo free, confidential testing for HIV and Hepatitis C. By integrating health services into a social and creative environment, the initiative successfully reduced the barriers to testing, proving that healthcare can and should be accessible, approachable, and stigma-free.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended and supported this initiative. Events like these strengthen the bonds within our community and highlight the importance of combining creative expression with essential social and medical support.
