On 22 August, a major celebration marking Ukraine’s Independence Day was held in Vilnius, organised by the Ukrainian Center. The event brought together the Ukrainian community, civil society organisations, volunteer initiatives, diplomatic representatives and partners who continue to support Ukrainians in Lithuania.
Yulia Golub, RefAid BaltHUB Project Coordinator in Lithuania, joined the networking zone—an open space where organisations could present their work, exchange experiences, engage directly with visitors and connect with other representatives of the Ukrainian community.
Throughout the event, visitors had an opportunity to learn more about RefAid BaltHUB, a regional project operating in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and supporting Ukrainians facing difficult life circumstances. In Lithuania, the project is implemented in partnership with the Association of Women Living with HIV and Their Family Members “Demetra”.
Direct conversations with Ukrainians provided an opportunity not only to present the project but also to gain a better understanding of the community’s needs. The discussions covered access to healthcare and social services, adaptation to life in Lithuania, access to reliable information, psychological and peer support, as well as assistance for women with children, people living with HIV and other Ukrainians in vulnerable situations.
“It is extremely important for us to be present where the Ukrainian community comes together—not only to speak about our work, but above all to listen to people. Behind every request is a specific life situation: a need for treatment, documents, psychological support, safe housing, accompaniment or simply clear information about where to seek help. Our task is to ensure that no one is left alone with their challenges and that everyone can access confidential, inclusive and non-discriminatory support,” Yulia said.
An important part of the event was also a conversation with Olha Nikitchenko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Lithuania. The dialogue provided an opportunity to exchange up-to-date information on the needs of Ukrainians in Lithuania, the project’s work and the available support opportunities. Particular attention was given to the work of Demetra, whose team helps people navigate the service system and access the consultations, testing, accompaniment and support they need.
RefAid BaltHUB continues its work to ensure that Ukrainians across the Baltic countries have access to essential services, support and a safe environment—regardless of their life circumstances or health status.
