On 27 September, a creative community meeting for Ukrainians took place at the EHPV centre in Tartu.
The main activity of the day was crochet. Participants learned how to make cozy cup coasters, and each piece turned out differently — with its own colours, character, and mood.
But the meeting was about much more than the activity itself.
While crocheting, participants got to know each other, shared personal stories, and talked about everyday life in Estonia. Conversations touched on adaptation, practical challenges, first impressions, new experiences, and small successes in a new place.
Creative activities can offer a simple and comfortable way to slow down, shift attention away from everyday stress, and spend time with others in a calm atmosphere. When this happens in a supportive group setting, it can also create space for connection, trust, and informal conversation.
For people adapting to life in a new country, such moments can matter. Support does not always have to begin with a formal consultation or a serious conversation. Sometimes it starts with a shared activity, a cup of tea, a new acquaintance, or the feeling that you are not alone.
Within RefAid BaltHUB, community activities and support groups help create spaces where people can meet, connect, exchange experiences, and gradually build a stronger sense of stability and belonging.
We thank everyone who joined us in Tartu and helped create such a warm, safe, and welcoming atmosphere.
Sometimes support looks exactly like this: creating something together, talking at your own pace, and simply spending time with people who understand.
