RefAid BaltHUB in Estonia: what kind of support can Ukrainian refugees receive?

When a person arrives in a new country because of war, support is needed not only in moments of crisis. Very often, it is needed in everyday life — to understand how the system works, where to look for services, whom to contact, and how to move from a question to a real solution.

This is exactly the kind of support that RefAid BaltHUB provides in Estonia. It is not only about information, but also about practical navigation, accompaniment, and human support for Ukrainian refugees, with special attention to vulnerable groups.

Within the project, people can receive information and social counselling, psychosocial support, accompaniment to social and medical services, and help with practical issues that often become a major source of stress after displacement. This may include support with documents, residence registration, job search, using government portals, and accessing other services.

An important area of work is health support. Through RefAid BaltHUB in Estonia, people can receive help navigating medical services, as well as support related to HIV and hepatitis C prevention and testing. For people living with HIV, an important component is support with access to ART and continuity of treatment.

Equally important is psychosocial and community-based support. The project includes support groups, peer support, and dedicated support for women with children and LGBTQ+ people. When needed, referrals for legal consultations are also possible. In some cases, interpreter support is essential, because language should not become a barrier to receiving help.

In situations of urgent need, the project can also provide emergency support. In addition, for people considering return, a voluntary return support component is available and may include transportation, temporary accommodation, and other related assistance.

As of July 1, RefAid BaltHUB in Estonia has already provided:

  • support to 35 clients;
  • 93 consultations;
  • 4+ support groups;
  • 17 emergency support interventions;
  • support for 2 voluntary returns, including transportation and temporary accommodation.

These figures show more than the scale of work. They show that support must be accessible, practical, and humane — support that helps people avoid being left alone in difficult circumstances.
